The first time I learned how to make a scroll saw, I was surprised at just how easy it was. It is not as hard as you might think. Although I was a bit apprehensive at the beginning, I have never really been one for woodworking before. I would usually end up getting into something, hammering my head against it until it broke, and then going out and buying a new one.
After watching an instructional video on how to make scroll saws, I decided to give it a try. It looked like it would be a lot of fun, so I did. Here are my results!
My first experience with woodworking was back in the 80’s when I first got a table saw. I still use it to this day, but I have had some other experiences that have made me wish I had gone for the scroll saw sooner. When I was learning how to make a scroll saw, the instructions were somewhat vague. I found it difficult to read and didn’t know where to start. Luckily, the book I bought had great pictures and it was easy to follow. There was also a lot of help available.
You can tell that someone spent a lot of time learning how to make a scroll saw. Obviously, I was no different and took a lot of effort to learn it. Luckily, woodworking has come a long way since then.
The internet has certainly made woodworking easier than it was in the past. Today, scroll saws can be purchased on sites that sell everything. The best thing about these sites is that they often have videos included. These videos can be a wealth of information for anyone looking to get into woodworking.
Learning how to make a scroll saw could take a lot of time. I certainly would not want to take that much time off from my hectic schedule. Fortunately, there are plenty of websites that offer video instructions. There is no reason for me to spend valuable time watching an instructional video when I can just watch something I can follow.
My other concern when learning how to make a scroll saw was how difficult it would be to make it fly out of the machine. With the videos and step by step instructions, I now know that this fear was unfounded. With a bit of practice, it should not be hard to get a scroll saw blade out of the machine. After making several of these projects, I am sure that I can make them fly out without any problem at all.
The cost of a homemade scroll saw is not much. I did not spend a lot of money on it. All it cost me was some wood, some screws, a drill, and some fasteners. Compared to what I would have spent on professional woodworking machines, I now have more money in my pocket. So my conclusion is that making a scroll saw at home is a fun project that is worth a try.
How to make a homemade scroll saw starts with buying the material you will need. Of course, you can always buy a saw already built, but then you would have to do a lot more work yourself. My cheapest material so far was some wood screws. Since I did not have any other material to work with, the cost was very low. Other materials that you might want to look into are the scroll saw itself, the scroll saw guide, and some wood glue. It would also help if you have some old fabric or cloth around you.
The next thing on how to make a homemade scroll saw is simple: assemble it. This was not a difficult process for me at all. All I had to do was read the instructions that came with the saw. With the saw fully assembled, I just loaded the material into it and started to cut.
Of course, you will need a scroll saw guide in order to accurately cut the material. It helps guide your machine along the right path so that the cut turns out nice and perfect. I prefer plastic scroll saw guides because they allow me to easily move the machine closer or further from the material to get the perfect angle. You can use wood guides for some situations, but for others plastic is a better option. Just check with your local hardware store or the Internet to see what is best for you.
A homemade scroll saw is not difficult to build. As long as you have all of the necessary tools, you can get your scroll saw up and running in no time. Of course, you will not be able to make a saw like those you see at the woodworking or metalworking stores. However, with a little bit of effort, you can get close.
